Recently BMW's M division announced that they were going to produce high performance diesel vehicles. This is indeed an eyebrow raising comment but not unexpected as diesels have indeed progressed a fair bit these days. However, over at Mercedes-AMG no such nonsense will happen in the near future as AMG has stated that they have no plans to follow BMW in doing so. And this little bit of news makes me feel a million times happier than receiving news about a diesel powered BMW M vehicle.

The main reason for this is that AMG says that diesel engines, this includes the current modern-day mega torque turbo-diesel engines, have too many compromises. AMG looked at forced inducted diesels a few years ago and found out that diesel engines still fall short of the petrol powered engines in terms of sound, weight, agility and (throttle) response.

AMG goes on to add the fact that technology of performance petrol powered engines are 'converging with diesel tech' and cites the example of their current twin turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 engine. With direct injection enabling very high compression ratios (of around 12.0:1 for a turbocharged car), turbocharging and all the usual high efficiency systems a petrol powered V8 can achieve pretty good fuel consumption and C02 figures. Actually, it isn't that close, diesels are still more efficient per drop of fuel used but you can't beat a petrol powered V8 in terms of sound. Imagine a clattering, noisy AMG V8 instead of something that sounds like a Messerschmidt World War II fighter plane. It wouldn't be right.

Do also imagine a Mercedes-AMG without its fantastic throttle response and a rev-limit of about 4,500rpm. That'll be pathetic!

It goes to show again that Mercedes Benz are indeed a company that can ignore trying to be politically correct and give us what's truly important - glorious petrol powered thrust, revs, sound and fun.

Trottle response is the worst enemy of diesels. there is always this lag between when the revs pick up and when you WOT.

And then you add the fact that it gives you all the torque in one lump and then nothing ...and it only revs to 4,500rpm...ever heard a small cc diesel touring car? I have and it is so quiet that you could fall asleep. I am glad AMG isn't following suit.

“WHAT’S A GOOD USERNAME?!” Such was the source of my agony as I was handed a pair of figurative keys to MyAutoBlog. I’d asked the colleague from IT who was helping me set up this account if I really had to make an account with my work email, hoping I could use the username that came with my personal MCF account instead. “yes”, in lowercase no less, was what I got. Oh well. After a good 10 minutes (I think), I decided on this username (a reference I hope someone gets), juvenile and

My inexplicable attraction to instant food

Ready-to-eat microwaveable meals, instant noodles, plane food - these aren't typically the kinds of foods that people will spring for when given a choice. But for some reason, I actually enjoy eating foods like that, and would even find myself craving for them at times. I know, most of you would say it's the salt, seasoning, MSG, sugar and all the unhealthy flavourings that I'm hooked to. And you might be right - but I think it's more than that; there's something about eati

    Building a racing-themed watch!

This. This watch dial is the reason I started on this particular watch build... It all began when I came across someone's build that utilised the same dial - prior to this, I did not even know of the existence of a Walter Wolf Racing branded watch or dial. If you don't have any idea who or what Walter Wolf Racing is, here's an excerpt from Wikipedia: "Walter Wolf Racing was a Formula One constructor active from 1977 to 1979, which won the first race the team entered. A right-handers world

I was mid-way through a bike ride in Ladahk, feeling the ache in my right hand, when a thought occurred to me: “Huh, how come the throttle is always on the right side of all bikes?”  Statistically, about 90% of people in the world are right-handed. Full disclosure: I am right-handed, part of this largely ignorant majority.  And if you think about it, some things are designed clearly with that in mind.  Throttle on a motorcycle? Right hand. Accelerator pedal in a car? Right f
