I read about the Mazda 2 sedan about 2 years ago. The sexy coupe-like 4-door sedan was unveiled at the 2007 Guangzhou Motor Show, and was built and sold in China by Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co Ltd. At that time, there was no news on whether the car would be sold outside China. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out from The Straits Times that this compact sedan will be making its debut in Singapore some time in March 2010. This will be the first Mazda in Singapore that is sourced from the land of thousand smiles.

From an aesthetic point of view, the Mazda 2 sedan certainly has one up against its closest rival, the Toyota Vios. The 2's body contour is smooth and athletic whereas the Toyota gives the impression of a teen who swallowed too much candies. Mazda's designers managed to perfect the art of adding a boot to a hatchback and my view is that it is better looking than its cousin, the Ford Fiesta sedan. At 4,270(L) x 1,695(W) x 1,480(H), the Mazda sedan is slightly shorter but much wider than the Vios. This should translate to better handling characteristics in Mazda.

Expect the Mazda 2 sedan to be powered by the 1.5L VVT unit that is currently serving the hatchback version. Gearbox is a conventional 4 speed automatic. Nothing fancy about the drivetrain but the Vios none better. My only wish is that the hatch's rear drum brake gets replaced with disc brake in the sedan form.

Mazda and Nissan has always prided themselves on the fact that all their cars are from Japan. Switching to Thailand cannot be good.

Toyota owners have long complained about the inferior quality of Thailand assembled cars. The fact that Toyota is still selling well is purely due to their low prices.

If Nissan and Mazda cars are made in Thailand, they better make sure that selling price is low. Don't be like Honda. Make the Honda City in Thailand, but price it so high. That's why their sales dropped like a sinking stone for 2009.

Well, the MIT toyota are marketted as no-frills hence the price.

The M2 and Laito are better built and full of features even though MIT, hence the price.

  • A sole-ful tribute

Car enthusiasts are an emotional bunch. So, I naturally develop feelings for things on wheels, be it four wheels or two. However, I was surprised to discover that I had become attached to my old pair of sneakers, whose soles are so worn that it hurts to wear them.  That is the unequivocal signal to retire them. But I must say "Thank you" before bidding them goodbye. The laceless design is convenient, saving time when you need to rush off in the morning Through thick and

Japan is weird. I love it (Part 5)

There are plenty of strange sports in this world. People running from bulls. People running after cheese. Power Slap.  But of course few places do weird quite like Japan. Introducing to you: Bo-taoshi.  The name means 'topple the pole', and that's exactly the name of the game. Except of course its never quite so simple.  You want teams? Oh, you get teams. 150 players, split into 75 offensive and 75 defensive - one holding your pole up, the other attacking another team to topple th
