Ford's soon-to-be-China owned brand ,Volvo, is expanding its range of gasoline engines with the presentation of the all new 2.0 liter GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) that will initially find its way under the hood of the S80 sedan, V70 estate and XC60 compact SUV models.

Even though Volvo did not mention anything about Ford, it is suspected that the new four-cylinder unit that combines turbocharging technology and direct injection with twin variable camshafts, is either the same engine or heavily based on Ford's new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine that will be used on several cars including the European Mondeo and Galaxy.

Volvo said that the new 2.0 GTDi petrol engine produces an output of 203 horsepower and 300Nm of peak torque that is sustained from 1750 rpm all the way up to 4,000 rpm. The engine will be offered in combination with Volvo's automatic six-speed Powershift transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox.

With this new engine and the six-speed manual gearbox, the S80 sedan accelerates from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in 7.9 seconds while returning a combined fuel consumption of 7.9 lt /100km. The performance figures of this new engine in other applications are shown in the table below:

The new 2.0 GTDi engine is being launched initially on markets that offer tax incentives for engines below two liters in displacement including South-East Asia, the Netherlands, China and Japan. Introduction in other countries/regions will follow later in the year.

With this new engine, the S80 will be a worthy competitor to the Benz E200 CGI, BMW 520i. If I have the dough, I would pick the S80 over the 2 continental stalwarts as it is less commonly found on the Singapore road!

  • A sole-ful tribute

Car enthusiasts are an emotional bunch. So, I naturally develop feelings for things on wheels, be it four wheels or two. However, I was surprised to discover that I had become attached to my old pair of sneakers, whose soles are so worn that it hurts to wear them.  That is the unequivocal signal to retire them. But I must say "Thank you" before bidding them goodbye. The laceless design is convenient, saving time when you need to rush off in the morning Through thick and

ERP 2.0: Possible positions for your processing unit

Your OBU's processing unit isn't always mounted on the passenger footwell. Depending on the car that you drive, more than one option may be available! Since November 2023, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has been gradually replacing in-vehicle units (IUs) with the new on-board units (OBU). The OBU will pave the way for smoother traffic as we transition to the new ERP 2.0 system that is based on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology.  The OBU comprises three parts: An

Titan's Fall: Back to Square One

Manchester United have once again signalled a restart with the sacking of Ten Hag, and just days later, announced the appointment of Ruben Amorim, who will join midway through the first half of the current season from Sporting Lisbon. Back to square one yet again for the Red Devils who, despite being one of the most successful clubs in England and biggest clubs in the world, have not won a league title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. Since then, they’ve gone through a whole ho

    The Act of Creation

“WHAT’S A GOOD USERNAME?!” Such was the source of my agony as I was handed a pair of figurative keys to MyAutoBlog. I’d asked the colleague from IT who was helping me set up this account if I really had to make an account with my work email, hoping I could use the username that came with my personal MCF account instead. “yes”, in lowercase no less, was what I got. Oh well. After a good 10 minutes (I think), I decided on this username (a reference I hope someone gets), juvenile and
