A profitable future for automakers usually relies mostly on yielding the best return from their products and technologies and at times these technologies does not come from the automaker themselves. There have been numerous partnerships between two auto firms and usually it is to exchange technologies with each other. Lately, BMW and Toyota have gone down that route.

Sometime last month, BMW and Toyota held talks regarding the exchange of technologies that they excel in. Reportedly, BMW will supply their diesel engines to Toyota and in exchange, Toyota will share its hybrid technology with BMW. During the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, both companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for a mid to long term collaboration on next-generation environment-friendly technologies.

Toyota aims to offer its current line-up with diesel engines especially in Europe where diesel emission tests are very stringent. And also they need to find a source outside of Japan to alleviate the strength of the Yen.

BMW is working hard on their i3 concept hybrid and to fund a hybrid technology development will cost a lot of money compared to buying that technology from another company, for this case, Toyota.

Toyota will receive access to BMW

I like the staggering torque of the turbo diesel. Hope to see that in Singapore.

We did not realise that the immigration process at the Hong Kong Kowloon West station involved both the Hong Kong and Chinese authorities, so we found ourselves in a rush to board the train (we boarded minutes before the scheduled departure). Through the eight-hour journey, the passing sights made me realise the diversity

Japan is weird. I love it (Part 6)

Fireflies. Not a topic I think about often, if at all, but here we are.  On a recent podcast episode, I learnt that the light that fireflies emit is nearly 100% efficient. That's amazing (nature generally is). And it is precisely the study of fireflies (and their light) that has allowed the development of more efficient LED lights.  On a whim, I did a bit of extra Googling, and lo and behold, Japan pops up once more, with yet another culturally-unique eccentricity.  In Japan, ther

The approach of the year-end holidays often also means the annual pilgrimage Singaporeans take to Japan to soothe their souls after a long year will soon kick into high season. For the many amongst us who can spare neither the financial expense nor the time, however, there's no reason to fret. Allow the mind some space to wander, and one will find there are many places on our sunny island tha

    Disconnecting from Our Virtual Reality

Recently, I had a scare at work. My laptop was suddenly unable to access the Internet despite working fine the entire day. A check with IT showed that the browser I was using, Arc, had somehow triggered the Falcon cybersecurity program, which promptly locked down my laptop despite the browser having worked fine for almost a year at that point. While I thankfully had cleared out my video backlog before it happened (most of them pending approval, a couple ready to publish), I was unable
