I was sitting in a chair at the reception area of a dance academy waiting for my daughter to finish her dance lesson when I realized why Volkswagen never rocked my boat, the GTI included. As I wrote elsewhere a few years ago, the reason I thought the GTI was not a fulfilling car to own was that the Mark5 Volkswagen looked too much like a mini MPV instead of a stonking hot hatch. When you parked it beside to its cousins the Audi A3 or the Skoda Octavia or even the larger sized A4, you

Sua_diablo, again no one is blaming him for taking a kick at Volks. They have their problems, even with the new 7 speed dry clutch on the 1.4 roc. Audi is and is meant to be heads and shoulders above VW that is doubtless too.

Comparing VW with Proton? Does that mean that VW cars are now nowhere good as the cherry QQs and tata nanos because the nanos and QQs are also made to be affordable transport of the masses? How blind and ignorant is that.

Just because the brand started out as a "people's car" does not mean that it has stayed in that area. End of the day its still a german brand with higher lvl of technology, how is it comparable to proton who still makes cars without power windows on all 4 ends???

Lammy84,

There you said it.. "just because it started as a people's car does not mean it has stayed there"... and i agree with you.. In fact, VW started in the 30's and their first few cars were the type 82s, better known as the beetle.. or some variant of it.... So, my point is, it has taken them 70 years to come up with the cars that they have for sale now.. and how old or young is proton? since 1985.. so, one will have to give them the benefit of doubt that perhaps in another 40 years, they may be on par with the current german marques.... and by the way, yes all new protons out from the factory now does come with power windows... but they do fail after about a year or two.. or less... maybe another 10 years experience will help? i dont know.. honestly i dont care.. why? because that's not the point here... it's because i think you are misinformed and have misread what the author is trying to say....

You have misunderstood the author greatly here....like the others too... the author was not trying to make comparison of the specs, features, technological advances between the two.. i've read enough of his articles to know that he wouldn't be that stupid... and the moderators here would not have allowed him to put his writings here if in fact he was that stupid....he was merely saying that he wouldn't buy a car that's tagged as a people's car... and saying that it's no better than a proton is exactly what he was trying to say.. only and only in the respect of it being a 'peoples car'..... in fact, i believe i can find some germans who would say that their VWs are like the protons here.... and of course they dont harp about it like it's a chalice from heaven....

Boy! Writing in a blog can be very stressful. Seem like people who are non News Editor or Language Guru can forget abt posting their views on the internet. Someone even suggested QC on posting, pity the poor moderators. What's next, looking for punctuation mistakes?

Relax, this is just a blog which is supposed to be informal. Bottom line is getting the points across. I enjoy reading the author's posting in a diferent perspective and he does has a point. The only regret is i couldn't afford an Audi.... yet.

just to join in the fun...

nano has 4 wheels, RR has 4 wheels also

both designed to go from point A to point B

so getting from point A to point B... RR is "actually no better... whether you like it or not."

hmm...

Carer> Ooo...aren't you a smart one eh? I'm pretty sure no one has a gun to your head and your face to a computer screen that's locked on this blog. You have a choice. If you don't like the entries here, you could move on. May I suggest a site like www.askoxford.com? I know...those English definitions and grammar give you a hard-on don't they?

Why don't you shut up and go back to sucking on Mummy's teat? Your silence and non-existence will be appreciated by EVERYONE.

Really sua diablo? Suzuki has been around ages and I dont see them coming up with any cutting edge technology. So now you are comparing existing technology of a firm against the "potential" a car maker has?

Total nonsense.

Lammy84,

You must be very blur or dont understand english.. i can't believe that you still don't see my point. I mentioned i don't care what is to become of proton.. power windows or not.. and now you're twisting my words saying i'm doing a comparison of what 'potential' a car maker has.. is that all u wanna talk about?? comparison?? is that all u know about??

Again, i tell you.. my point is you have misunderstood the author (just as you have misunderstood me) by thinking we are comparing technologies of the cars.... it's just the fact that he wouldn't buy a VW because it's a 'people's car' in germany.. it's really his choice....

And btw, suzuki makes the best hot hatch chassis in it's class.. the swift sport.. and that is technology.... in chassis designing... or are you lame enough to think that technology is only in the amount of electronics a car has? like ABS ESP ABD AYC ASD FSI VVT DVVT XYZ ABC??? then u still have a lot to learn about the motor vehicle industry and it's technology...

your English fails to impress me, REGARDLESS the fact that I concur with some of your points.

Sun Diablo, and Lammy, why dont you both create a post in the forum and fight it out, instead of doing it here.

BTW Just to join in the fun.

Diablo, so are you saying that VW should make a car that is better than Audi and sell it at VW price?

or Should Toyota make a car better than Lexus at Toyota price?

If you did, i am sad that you are not their CEO cause thats mean i can get a superior car at a cheaper price. Imagine a IS300 at Camry Price.

haha. all u jokers. the reason why are there misunderstanding is due to lousy command of language. still say its not impt in a blog entry like this one? i hope the standard of such blogs don deteriorate as i actually enjoy reading some.

i am definitely not looking at perfect eng or fanciful sentence structures. im just merely asking for some simple qc.

Yes to each his own. VW knows that very well and hence different brands for different market segments.

I for one am sucker for VW's understatement which allows me to indulge in quiet guilty pleasures in the need for speed without drawing too much attention, at least from the exterior.

I'd prefer to be a wolf in a sheep's skin rather than a lion showing off his shiny mane in a billowing wind.

Speaking of wolf. As opposed to the blog, Hitler's initial intention for VW was NOT for the folks. He's planned for war machines all along and the VWs were built such that they could be quickly converted into military vehicles.

The deutsche Volken paid installments in advance but never get to drive their 'dream' cars because the war already started.

In a sense, it does draw some parallel to a wolf in a sheep's skin. [flowerface]

  • A 20-year journey, an old passion rekindled

For us 90s babies, the Holy Trinity of Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network formed a big part of our childhood. The internet was just about coming into fruition, with the rise of a plethora of websites with numerous entertaining flash games and of course, the early days of YouTube. And though those things have come and gone, one thing in my life remained constant: My love for Pokemon. I first got into Pokemon 20 years ago, and I remember exactly how it went down. Let me set the

Less caffeine leads to more dreams

There's nothing like a double espresso to kickstart your morning, especially if it's extracted from medium- or dark-roasted beans. What a tasty way to begin the day. I enjoy coffee, but I'm not a caffeine addict so it's not a must for me to consume. In fact, lately, I've only been drinking it once or twice a week - doing this ensures that when I do drink it (to power my way through a hectic day), the caffeine kick will be well and truly felt. I did not stop drinking coffee thrice a day

Japan: The trend that became a turn-off

Ahh Japan. The destination that many travellers desire. The perennial trending subject on social media. Japanese cuisine, culture, quirks, technology, and everything kawaii have inspired endless posts, stories, reels, YouTube videos, and TikToks. If one didn't know better, you'd think it was the dream destination on this planet. While I love the food, the service and the shopping, the sheer number of tourists (me included) has become a turn-off. I'm not talking about those who inconven

    The art of doing nothing?

Here’s a quick fun fact for those who’ve sworn themselves entirely off TikTok, out of the fear of having to run yet another social media account: You don’t actually need to log in to the app to scroll it. Quite incredibly (but also quite scarily), the platform’s algorithm is still able to curate an incredible array of videos that it thinks will make you want to keep scrolling. And for this existential-crisis-ridden 28-year old, it’s decided to feed videos more along the 'self-help’ route re
