Sometimes real life is even more bizarre than in the movies. The top brass over at Mazda North America must be really miffed as they had to approve a recall for 65,000 Mazda 6 made between 2009-2010 due to the fact that there have been twenty reported cases of yellow sac spiders getting in a ventilation line of the Mazda 6's fuel system. This arachnid invasion to the fuel system could cause increased pressure in the fuel tank which could lead to cracks or even a fire.

The press statement did not really say how those little crawlers got inside the Mazda's fuel systems but theories suggest that the spiders may have entered the fuel tank during assembly. The cars affected were built at Mazda's US plant and only affects the cars over there. These cars include Mazda 6 sold in the US, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Mazda also reports that there have been no accidents caused by these fuel system invasion.

Now for some National Geographic-like stuff for those interested in these little crawlies. The Yellow Sac spider or, as it is scientifically known, the Cheiracanthium is a species of spider from the Miturgidae family of arachnids. They are usually pale yellow in color around the abdomen area and its size ranges from 5 to 10mm. So it's pretty tiny. It is also a spider that can bite. A bite can cause a small lesion in humans and there could be a small risk of infection but its bite isn't one of those severe one that poisonous spiders like the female black widow which could kill a human. And you thought you'd never learn anything useful in an autoblog.

Imagine that, spiders in your fuel lines. How do they survive in the fuel lines and tank of a Mazda 6? What do they eat? Do they sip or guzzle RON92 or do they prefer higher octane?

Just rebrand the model a Mazda 6 "Spider", call it truth in advertising if challenged, and they're golden.

Hahaha! A spider that isn't a convertible....that's a first for the car industry if that happens.

  • Hard Enduro: The ultimate motorsport?

I enjoy motorsports of all kinds - four wheels good, two wheels better. And while watching them on TV (okay let's be honest Youtube, who even watches TV nowadays) is fun, getting to partake in anything even remotely resembling it, even in a highly truncated, totally superficial manner, is even more exciting.  Earlier this year, I did a short 2.5 day off-road riding 'tour', and it was easily the hardest, most physically demanding 2.5 days I've ever spent on a motorbike. It really gives you a

    Building a racing-themed watch!

This. This watch dial is the reason I started on this particular watch build... It all began when I came across someone's build that utilised the same dial - prior to this, I did not even know of the existence of a Walter Wolf Racing branded watch or dial. If you don't have any idea who or what Walter Wolf Racing is, here's an excerpt from Wikipedia: "Walter Wolf Racing was a Formula One constructor active from 1977 to 1979, which won the first race the team entered. It was owne

My inexplicable attraction to instant food

Ready-to-eat microwaveable meals, instant noodles, plane food - these aren't typically the kinds of foods that people will spring for when given a choice. But for some reason, I actually enjoy eating foods like that, and would even find myself craving for them at times. I know, most of you would say it's the salt, seasoning, MSG, sugar and all the unhealthy flavourings that I'm hooked to. And you might be right - but I think it's more than that; there's something about eati

    A right-handers world

I was mid-way through a bike ride in Ladahk, feeling the ache in my right hand, when a thought occurred to me: “Huh, how come the throttle is always on the right side of all bikes?”  Statistically, about 90% of people in the world are right-handed. Full disclosure: I am right-handed, part of this largely ignorant majority.  And if you think about it, some things are designed clearly with that in mind.  Throttle on a motorcycle? Right hand. Accelerator pedal in a car? Right f
