Toyota S-FR Racing Concept to be shown at Tokyo Auto Salon

Toyota has revealed an aggressive racing version of the S-FR concept and will be shown in the upcoming 2016 Tokyo Auto Salon. Based on the original concept shown earlier this year, the new concept gets a new front grill, bigger front bumper with an apron, a vented hood, wider fenders and new side skirts. At the rear, the car gets a huge swan neck GT wing and a large diffuser.   Eagle-eyed readers might notice the racing concept looks longer and wider too. They are right because Toyota says th

Taxi apps: Boon or bane?

The way investors are falling over themselves to put hundreds of millions into taxi apps, you would think they had found a cure for cancer.   In just a little over three years, more than a dozen of these companies promising to find you a ride when you need one have sprouted across the globe, sucking billions in venture capital and grabbing headlines everywhere.   But will they deliver the change they promise or will they fizzle out like the tech start-ups that mushroomed in the late 1990s?

Land Rover confirms Evoque convertible for 2016

Land Rover has confirmed plans to build a production version of its Range Rover Evoque Convertible concept. The idea of a topless Evoque was presented at the 2012 edition of the Geneva Motor Show.   Set to be based on the Evoque Coupe, Land Rover will bill the Evoque convertible as an alternative to premium German drop-tops like the Audi TT. However, the Evoque convertible is expected to remain a low-volume niche model designed primarily to boost Land Rover's image.   The yet-unnamed convert

Why Singapore still needs more cars

When the COE system was just four years old in 1994, well-respected transport and behavioural economist Anthony Chin predicted that, in time, only top earners in Singapore would be able to afford cars.   The Government dismissed his assertion and, in the two decades since, it would seem that Professor Chin - who died last year at the age of 57 after a short illness - got it wrong.   Car ownership has been rising, not falling. By 2012, 45 per cent of households owned cars - up from less than

The politics and costs of high-speed rail project

HERE’S a note of caution about highspeed rail (HSR) projects.   The one planned for Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and estimated to cost $14.9 billion, has been hailed by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and his Singapore counterpart Lee Hsien Loong as a “game-changer”. The two prime ministers gave the green light to South-east Asia’s first HSR project two years ago. Once operational, the 300kmh train service will significantly reduce travelling time between the two capitals to 90 minutes, sh

Toyota unveils Supra replacement

It seems that Toyota is keen to inject more athleticism in its model lineup, after the recipe worked well for the GT86, as well as for its sister company Lexus with the new RC Coupe.   It has been more than a decade since its last halo sports car, the Supra, saw daylight. Better late than never, there is now a beam of light at the end of the tunnel. The FT-1, no doubt, will be the spiritual successor to the Supra, and may even bear the same moniker when it goes for production.   The futu

New bus model raises hopes for better service

THERE was a public uproar last year when former Public Transport Council chairman Gerard Ee said in an interview with The Straits Times that if commuters wanted better service, they should just pay for it.   But Mr Ee was right, even if what he really meant was "somebody had to pay for it".   Two weeks ago, Anglo-Austra-lian transport group Tower Transit emerged the winner in Singapore's first bus contracting tender.   Its bid of $556 million to run 26 services out of a depot in Jurong Wes

Watch hackers mess with a Jeep's engine, brakes and gearbox

We are sure not many people are aware of how easy it is for hackers to access the functions of modern cars and this video will is a good reminder of how dangerous a connected car can get if automakers don't improve the security of their increasingly connected vehicles.   With the help of hackers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, Wired Magazine used Jeep's Cherokee to demonstrate what they meant.   Making use of software that lets them send commands through Jeep’s Uconnect, its internet-conn

'Upsizing' of engine displacement is the way forward

Reuters has just published a report saying automakers will be reversing the recent downsizing trends for both petrol and diesels engines as the small engines have trouble passing real-world emissions test.   While the turbocharged small engine capacity provided decent power for everyday driving, it is said that small petrol engines 'spew fine particles and carbon monoxide' and that the heat generated by small turbodiesels result in NOx readings over 15 times the legal limit. Evolution of the Formula 1 steering wheel

Here's a cool video showing the evolution of Formula 1's steering wheel as the years go by. Starting from the 1960's which is basically just a wheel and nothing more, the video shows us how the wheel changes as technology creeps into the sport.   Starting from the 80's, buttons and dials started appearing on the wheel and by the 90's, advanced electronics allowed the changing of engine maps and other systems via the wheel in the form of knobs.   Today, the wheel is hardly recognisable as a
