Honda Civic Type R

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lXGmjt1FtQThere’s plenty to shout about when were talking about the new Civic Type-R as far as numbers go – 310 PS and 400 Nm from a 2.0 litre VTEC Turbo engine, a 270 km/h top speed and a 0-100 km/h time of 5.7 seconds is rather impressive. Great on-paper numbers then, but what about real world performance? Honda has announced the Nürburgring lap time for the Civic Type R development car, and the magic number is 7 minutes 50.63 seconds, which puts the new CTR w

New Honda NSX meets its hardcore predecessor

Can Honda's complex hybrid supercar match the purity and focus of the legendary NSX-R? DriveTribe's Editor-at-Large Jethro Bovingdon has the answers in his video review.   Shot in Britain's Anglesey circuit, the two cars are actually pretty different in our opinion as one is a a hardcore sports car built with only setting lap times and driver enjoyment in mind while the newer NSX is a technological tour-de-force that has to do well as an all rounder daily driver.   So which one will Jethro

Mercedes teases interior of next super sports car

Following the SLS AMG, the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT is the second vehicle to be independently developed by AMG. While the exterior still remains to be clouded in secrecy, Mercedes has unveiled the cabin ahead of its global debut later this year - presumably during the Paris Motor Show in October.   Finished in my two favourite colours - red and black - the quality and overall design of the cabin is nothing short of superior and sleek, and the quality is similar to Mercedes' cabins in new car

COE cycles of boom and bust

Since its inception in 1990, the vehicle quota system has followed a 10-year peak-and-trough cycle, where the annual supply of certificates of entitlement (COEs) could vary from 20,000 to 100,000.   Even if this fluctuation does not impair the effectiveness of the COE system in controlling Singapore's vehicle population, it is highly disruptive. For consumers, the price swings cause discontent, and trigger wasteful outcomes such as cars barely three years old being scrapped.   This is becaus

Special cars for that special wedding

Renting a special wedding car will make your big day a fun experience filled with special memories. As most couples would agree, fancy wedding cars are great for taking lovely and cool photographs and for arriving in style. An elegant and beautiful wedding car will definitely be something the newlyweds can reminisce about as they celebrate their anniversaries in years to come.   Many couples borrow a friend's vehicle, rent one or use their own car for the big day. There are also some that have

Tesla sells more Model S than the combined sales of the 7 Series and S-Class

According to Digital Trends, Elon Musk’s electric saloon is the king of the luxury sedan segment in America by managing to beat both the BMW 7 Series and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class in the third quarter of the year in terms of sales.   While BMW sold 3,634 units of the 7 Series and Mercedes sold 3,138 units of the S-Class, Tesla managed to sell 9,156 units of its Model S. Tesla then went on to point out that "Our Q3 delivery count should be viewed as slightly conservative, as we only count a ca

Big Idea No. 10: Downsize the PIE

MY BIG Idea No. 10 in this series of essays on Singapore's future is easy to remember but hard to implement: "Downsize the PIE."   This idea came to my mind when I saw a huge sign along the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) saying "Upsize the PIE".   It was a clever play on words.   It is always good to increase the size of the pie, literally speaking. However, in land-scarce Singapore, how could we possibly celebrate the fact that we are expanding road space?   Every square metre we give up f

This Corolla Altis refuses to die

We all know Toyota's reliability is top notch and most will easily outlast our 10-year COE cycle. Don't believe? Here's one very tough Toyota Corolla Altis that can still amazingly drive despite the huge amount of damage done to the car.   Spotted on the roads of Pakistan by another motorist, the car appears to have crashed sideways into a pole or a tree. We wonder why the owner did not bother towing it to the scrapyard...   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0QtcvpDMwE

Extreme Subaru BRZ spotted at New York Auto Show

Photos of this extreme big-winged BRZ has been spotted floating around on the net recently. Caught at the upcoming New York Auto Show, no one seems to know what version of this BRZ could be.   Unless much mistaken, this should be the global debut of this concept car and looks like it would be a preview for faster BRZ. We doubt the L-shaped LED lights would make it to production even if we wanted.   Or this could be an elaborate April fool's by Subaru? Hmmmmm....

Modified Nissan GT-R sets new quarter mile record

This 2,200bhp Nissan GT-R might be the fastest R35 GT-R ever recorded in a quarter mile drag. It is built in Bahrain by Ekanno Racing.   Back in January, the car was clocked doing a 7.44 second timing and has now shaved 0-400m drag timing to 7.168 seconds. It passed the finish line doing 336km/h.   In comparison, the three hypercars, Ferrari LaFerrari, Porsche 918 Spyder and McLaren P1, need nearly 10 seconds to do the same quarter mile drag.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NjKePhgfcE

130 hp power limit for Cat A too complex to implement

IT IS safe to say the folks at the automotive policy and planning unit of the Land Transport Authority (LTA) won't be head-hunted by Apple anytime soon –- if only because the American company's core philosophy of elegant simplicity would be lost on them.   Witness the tangled web that is the certificate of entitlement (COE) system and how it has become even more complicated since February, when a power limit of 130 hp was adopted for the small-car category of COEs (that is, for cars with 1,600

Driver races with a Hayabusa and spins out of control but recovers "initial D" style!

Singapore has its very own Takumi! (The main character of Initial D, btw) A video of a car with unknown origins racing against a Suzuki Hayabusa has received over 40 shares under 5 hours! If you haven't already seen the video, here you go! The original video is from District Singapore's Facebook page.   What's happening? In the video, it starts with the Hayabusa abruptly cutting into the cam car's lane and causing the car to swerve and spin out of control.

The Mazda 2 1.5 sedan automatic gets driven

Let's look at a S$65,000 or thereabouts car (depending on the COE of course) that had recently been launched and see whether its any good to drive it or not. The car in question is the Mazda 2 Sedan 1.5 automatic. Yes, the hatchback has been around for two years and it has basically taken Mazda that amount of time to come out with a sedan version of it for the sedan loving Asians.   I think one of the reason people in this region like sedans is because it looks a little more dignified and big

The difference between fake and real wheels

Mercedes Australia has conducted a test to show just how big of a difference there is between genuine alloy wheels and the fake ones.   Looking virtually the same, they bought a set of replicas via an online store and fitted them onto a CLA Shooting Brake for the test. Using another identical CLA Shooting Brake that is fitted with real wheels, they took both cars to the test track which simulated the car going over a pothole at 50km/h.   Watch the video below and see what happened to the re

Dealers have upper hand in vehicle-finance market with packages and freebies

Citibank's latest salvo in the car loans business might seem like a valiant attempt to rid the middlemen on behalf of the customer. But the drive could hit that proverbial wall, given the powerful influence that car dealers wield in the car loans market. In a week's time, the bank will offer in-principle approval for a car loan to customers, before they shop for a car. This deviates from the existing practice, under which car companies receive a commission from the bank in exchange for submittin
