Beautiful Roads of SG

When Singapore roads are mentioned, the image conjured is often of well paved roads with HDB blocks rising in all directions and the next traffic light a few meters away. Hop over to our neighbouring country and the view changes dramatically. Especially when going up to places like Ipoh where dramatic views are a sight to behold along the way. Over in the European countries roads such as the Le Viaduc de Millau just demands you to slow down and take in the amazing sight.   Le Viaduc de Millau

Formula 1 at Shanghai: Button and Hamilton make it a one-two for McLaren

Jenson Button wins the 2010 Shanghai F1 Grand Prix. The 2009 World Champion started fifth on the grid and his decision to stay on slicks when everyone else pitted for intermediates as well as Nico Rosberg spinning saw him move to P1 on lap 20. He maintained in that position till the end and insisted after the race that his victory was down to the team's ability to make the correct decisions when it mattered. The Shanghai race ended with Button 1st, his teammate Lewis Hamilton in 2nd and Nico Ro

The abandoned pedigree cat

This is not your normal fury kitty and it is worth much more than that. Taken in the Qatari desert, this photo of a Jaguar XJ220 left to languish at the mercy of the elements is wrenching to any lover of the model. The XJ220 was a mid-engined sports car developed by Jaguar in partnership with Tom Walkinshaw Racing. It premiered in 1988 as a concept car and was produced between the years 1992 and 1994. Only 281 were ever made.   The 220 moniker stems from the car's top-speed goal of 220 mph wh

Lamborghini does not only do motor shows to showcase its talents

[extract] -Mr. Maurizio Reggiani of Lamborghini Sometimes a car manufacturer does not only do motor shows in order to showcase its capabilities and cars. It does other types of trade shows too. An electric race Mini laps the Nurburgring. Quietly.

The future of motor racing's so quiet I gotta use loud speakers. Yes. Loud speakers pumping out a fake V8 soundtrack while purely electric racers run around race tracks just whizzing around with hardly any sound coming from them. You wouldn't know if an electric race car is coming or going. And its very possible as the BMW Mini is now the first automotive manufacturer that has lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife's 20.8km long distance in a modified racing version of the Mini E. The purely electr

The BRABUS Vanish: Another very, very, very mad Merc

The people from the Middle East are at it again. Remember the posting on the Gemballa Ferrari Enzo where a middle eastern client felt that the Ferrari Enzo wasn't radical enough? Now it seems that the pretty fabulous, limited run twin turbocharged V12 AMG Mercedes SL65 Black isn't radical enough for at least one of them. 670 bhp, 1000 electronically limited Newton meters of torque and a 130 or so kilos lighter, 0-100km/h in 3.8seconds and the 200km/h in 11seconds that the standard SL65 can prod

I want this piece of "Junk" - The Bugatti Veyron

When you are responsible for many Formula One World Championships and devastatingly fast supercars such as the new McLaren MP4-12C, you're entitled to speak your mind. The executive chairman and part owner of the McLaren Group, Ron Dennis, has earned a reputation for his outspoken opinion and this time directed his criticism toward the venerable Bugatti Veyron by calling it a 'complete piece of junk'.   The 63 year-old was being interviewed by Arabian Business when he said he could not even f

Clean fun from Lotus

The "added lightness" mantra is well-known in performance circles--cutting weight helps everything about a sports car, from acceleration to braking to handling. Now, it seems to help out in emission figures as well. Lotus announced the 2011 Elise scored 46.6 mpg and a mere 239 grams of CO2 emissions per mile, making it the cleanest and most efficient gasoline-powered car in its performance category.   When the revised Lotus was revealed in February, it was announced that it would be powered

Maserati competes in the 2010 FIA GT1 Championships: First race, 17th April 2010

The 2010 FIA GT1 World Championship will start off on Saturday, 17 April at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi with six manufacturer entries consisting of twenty-four cars. The defending champions, the Maserati MC12s, are expected to be at the forefront, even if they are slightly penalized in terms of performance by new FIA GT technical modifications. This is actually nothing new as when the racing versions of the MC12s first came out in 2004, the GT1 rules were somehow changed and the cars wer

Enough with the fairy lights!

Audi started on of the biggest motoring trends to date, and if you're still wondering what that is, I suggest you go out on the road one of these days and see how many cars you can spot with "DRLs" or 'Day-time Runnning Lights'. Workshops around Singapore have been selling these aftermarket LEDs to customers who don't have an Audi, but want to add a little 'Audi-ness' to their own ride with these lights.   There are two different camps with different opinions regarding this particular accessor

The Subaru Impreza scoop, Part III

The Impreza STI with the large scoop will Nevah, Evah die! At least according to our regional modders that is. It has become a major trend with your neighbours up north to make almost every make or model of car out there into an Impreza scoop utilizing monster. Some with head shaking sheer lunacy, like the triple scooped new Proton Saga shown here, or some tastefully done ones. Actually, there are no tastefully done ones I've seen. Except for some earlier GC Imprezas, SF Foresters and other Scoo

Abandoned supercars?

Growing up in a country where cars (even a humble Toyota) costs a premium to own, it's not uncommon to see owners of even a Perodua Kancil polishing their four wheeled possessions with lots of TLC on a Sunday afternoon.   So it is especially infuriating for a Singaporean car enthusiast like myself to see exotic classics being left abandoned and uncared for in other parts of the world. It just seems morally wrong to leave a classic Miura SV rotting in a barn. How do these people sleep at night?

Audi A3 gets tweaked for MY2011

Along with the updated 2011 TT Coupe and Roadster, Audi also announced model year changes for its A3 range that includes the three door hatchback, five-door Sportback, Cabriolet and the sporty S3 hot hatch.   One may need to put the revised A3 under a microscope to spot the differences with the existing version. Nonetheless, Audi says that the single-frame grille element and trims on the B-columns are now painted in high-gloss black, while the the lower air inlets have chrome struts. The exte

Revelation in driving the Ford Focus ST

Last week I took some time out to get behind the wheel of the Ford Focus ST.   Not the typical and traditional choice for hot-blooded individuals looking for the thrill of speed, the ST has been blazing its path and winning hearts in countries outside of Asia with its stunning looks and scorching performance.   Can anyone remember the Ford Escort Cosworth? Well, the ST comes under the same family line.   When it comes to hatches, in particular the hot ones, the VW Golf GTI clicks to mind

Renault's underrated gem - The Laguna Coupe

You see, the French have never really been good at making cars, their designs have always been avant-garde (like the Renault Avantime for instance) but hopelessly impractical and unreliable to the rest of the human world. So they'd rather cook. Or paint. But, with the arrival of the Laguna Coupe, they've finally made one that works.   The curves, the grill and the tail-lights are all reminiscent of the Aston Martin DB9.. and with that bold front grille the Laguna Coupe is a stunning car to be
